We are delighted to offer Scent Detection training courses, taught by qualified trainer, Nikki Turner. Nikki was runner up Scentwork UK Dog and Handler of the year 2021 with her Miniature Dachshund, Theo.
Scent Detection is based on the nose work practised by sniffer, search & rescue, and medical detection dogs, and sees dogs using their sense of smell to identify and locate a scent which they have been previously trained to detect. It is a natural behaviour for dogs, who have highly sensitive noses, vastly superior to our own. Adapted for owners and their dogs as a sport and training activity, it works the dog’s brain and nose while solidifying the bond of trust between dog and owner.
Our classes are suitable for all breeds and most ages of dogs (puppies from 16 weeks), and for dogs with injuries or disabilities – scentwork is a safe, low-impact and non-injurious sport. It's also a great activity to keep your dog occupied when the weather prevents their usual walks.
Scent Detection training is so much fun for both you and your dog – the results are rewarding, and your dog will be mentally satisfied and tired after a session. Shy dogs are seen to build confidence and boisterous dogs to find focus in only a short time. Your bond with your dog will strengthen as you each learn the language of Scent Detection.
You can choose to participate purely for fun, or go on to enter trials run by Scentwork UK, UK Sniffer Dogs, UK ScentSport and Nosework Games. Classes will be limited to 6 participants each, to ensure everyone receives the right attention and training.
Nikki, your instructor, holds City & Guilds Qualifications in Instruction and Scent Detection Dog Handling with The UK College of Scent Dogs, Lantra accreditation with UK Scent Sports, is a Bronze, Silver and Gold Instructor for Scent detection and Tracking with UK Sniffer dogs, level 6 Instructor for Scentwork UK, member of the school of canine science and is an accredited Mantrailing Global Instructor and Assessor.
